About us

Revitalizing Our Democracy is a policy group of Ontario Liberal Party members with a special interest in the quality of our democracy. Our concern is that foundational issues such as this, which affect everything else over the long haul tend to be neglected in campaign platforms and require more attention. Our group was created after the 2018 election, which saw the Ontario Liberal Party reduced to a rump of its former self with only 7 seats in Queen’s Park.  

Our main focus has been on electoral reform and other foundational issues such as political financing and the need for youth engagement.  Our flagship policy brief by the same title, Revitalizing Our Democracy, in Dec. 2020, covered those three topics and remains available in pdf format. 

Six years later, the structural foundations of our democracy are more important than ever, as epitomized in Andrew Coyne's recent book Crisis of Canadian Democracy. As that book illustrates, there are many dimensions to this. Hence our own approach of covering more than one of these dimensions. That said, we have come to focus more and more on electoral reform as a lynch-pin reform leading to lasting improvements in most other areas.  In 2024, we developed a set of four resolutions in different areas. In 2026, we have reassessed our proposed approach to electoral reform, with an eye on what our party might be able to do, in collaboration with other parties, before, during and after the next Ontario election, putting that in the form of a revised resolution on electoral reform.
